What is standardization?
Standardized herbal extracts are the highest quality herbs on the market today. Because some herbs have been studied so intensely, scientists have found which is the active ingredient for certain herbs. This is astounding news! Since the active ingredient is known, we can concentrate it and minimize the variability in herb quality and activity. Think of it this way, a standardized herbal is similar to eating the fruit that grows on the best soil and with the best climate conditions EVERY time.
Have herbs ever been approved by any government body?
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration, who is responsible for maintaining standards on supplement manufacturing and labeling, is currently working on a regulatory system to evaluate the safety and efficacy of herbals. Interestingly, aside from many other sources, the FDA and other government bodies seek guidance from information found in Germany's Commission E, a well known worldwide authority on herbal medicine. Because herbal medicines have a special status in Germany, their knowledge and use of herbs is much more advanced. The German Commission E was created in 1978 by the Ministry of Health to evaluate the safety and efficacy of herbs. This Commission produced a series of writings and a list of "approved" herbs which many health care professionals refer to today.
